Health and Safety

Health and safety, the protection of people and property, are Lafarge’s top priorities and affect everything we do.

Controlled Blasting

Putting health and safety first is at the heart of our culture. Our quarry is highly-regulated and our policy is to operate within all regulatory standards. Accordingly, we regularly assess our operations and implement best practices to constantly improve what we do and how we do it. The quarry is closely regulated, monitored and inspected by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to assure compliance with all environmental, health and safety laws and regulations. Safety, the protection of our employees and neighbors, always comes first.

Currently, we have gone more than 11 years without an accident that has caused a single employee to miss time at the quarry. That is an accomplishment we are proud of and one we are determined to keep up.

Health and Safety: The Top Priority

Health and safety are the first considerations in everything we do and in every aspect of our operation. That commitment to health and safety includes our employees and continues outside of the quarry as well.

Measures used to ensure safety at the quarry and outside of it include:

  • Properly Loaded Trucks. We work to ensure trucks are properly loaded to safe levels and covered by tarps to stop spillage of rock from trucks during transport.

  • Safe Speed Limit. A speed limit of 15 miles per hour is maintained at all times to minimize dust kick-up and to keep our focus on safety. We monitor local roads to ensure rocks and debris from our quarry stay in the quarry. Health and safety are always our top priorities.

  • Berm Construction. It's our policy to construct a berm covered by trees and greenery along the perimeter of the quarry to obscure view of the quarry, contain dust and create a barrier between our work and our neighbors to limit noise.

Mining Operations: Controlled Blasting

A key component of our operation is controlled blasting. Blasting is the most efficient way to mine stone from the quarry and it is also the most highly-regulated activity at the quarry. Blasting is closely regulated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) which sets strict limits on the sound and vibration allowed from a blast. Vibra-Tech, an independent consultant in seismic monitoring, sets seismographs in the Lockport quarry and even in neighbors' yards to measure ground vibrations. Vibra-Tech carefully measures and reports the data from blasting to federal and state regulatory agencies. This data is carefully monitored by the DEC and personnel at the quarry.
